About Bakersfield

Bakersfield is a small suburb of Nottingham situated in the eastern part of the city. It sits just two miles from Nottingham City Centre, making it ideal for those wishing to commute.

Centred around Oakdale Road, popular Bakersfield was developed during the 1930’s, with a mixture of private and council residential housing. A remarkable feature of the council housing (designed by T. Cecil Howitt) is the space given over to gardens and other open spaces. Oakdale Road takes its name from a large oak tree which once stood there and is a typical feature of the area in that many of the road names end in ‘dale’ (for example Parkdale, Middledale, Langdale, Greendale and Kirkdale), which sometimes causes confusion for first-time visitors.

There are a variety of local amenities such as shops which includes a Tesco local, as well as independent eateries and takeaways situated along Oakdale Road that serve the community. Within only a short distance away are the areas of Sneinton, Carlton and Colwick, all of which offer a further range of shopping amenities as well as excellent transport links into the city centre.

Sitting adjacent to the Bakersfield area is Colwick Woods and Nature Reserve, a large area of ancient woodland, public walks and green open space. There are panoramic views from the top of Colwick Woods of the Trent Valley as far as Belvoir Castle and across the city to Wollaton, Clifton and the Ratcliffe on Soar power station.
