Sherwood is situated approximately 1.5 miles (2.3 km) north of Nottingham city centre. Major development in the area took place between 1870 and 1910, during the growth of the lace industry. Sherwood has St Martin's Church on Trevose Gardens, Sherwood Methodist Church on Devon Drive and United Reform Church on Edwards Lane. The main shopping precinct lies along the busy Mansfield Road (A60). The area is well served by several Nottingham City Transport bus routes and is a main artery road into the City. Along Mansfield Road there are a variety of independent restaurants. These are interspersed with high street shops, a post office and independent retailers. Sherwood is also home to a variety of primary and secondary schools including Haydn Primary School, Sherwood E-ACT academy and Nottingham Free School.
